Overview Road Map

Introduction

The Master of Science in Information Security degree program prepares students for a professional career in Information Security. The program aims to develop core competencies in the fields of computer networks security, application security, and information security management. Students also have the opportunity to learn the technical aspects of information security by understanding current threats and vulnerabilities and examining ways of developing effective countermeasures. The program is designed to develop knowledge and skills in specialized technical areas. The thesis component of this program provides the participant with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge acquired through the course-work in solving complex problems such as cyber threats, data loss or theft, computer intrusions and privacy breaches; underscoring the need for improved security practices and so on. The program is focused to produce professionals competent enough to offer solution for Information Security problems in the market. Graduates of this program will be able to address information security related issues in present and future era of Information Technology.

Program Objective

The main aim of this program is to fulfill the growing national need of well trained professionals to work in a wide range of roles to protect Information Systems in all types of organizations, including research and academia. The objectives of this programs are as follows;

  • To produce skilled people who are able to contribute towards need of protecting national information infrastructure from all kinds of threats.
  • To produce skilled persons who can play an effective role in international efforts to make the cyberspace safe, secure and reliable for the national and international community.
  • To produce graduates who have expanded knowledge of the discipline and can apply their knowledge to resolve current challenges facing the information security world.

MS degree program in Information Security at UMT provides students with the comprehensive skills and knowledge they need to pursue the best career option in one of the most dynamic areas of modern technology. The programs prepare students with a broad scientific knowledge, an aptitude in a variety of information security management fields and the ability to synthesize. The program is focused to produce professionals competent enough to offer solution for Information Security problems in the market. Graduates of this program will be able to address information security related issues in present and future era of Information Technology. The exponential growth of technology and computing over the last decade has led to a growing demand for information security professionals in the field. The advancement of Information Technology has dramatically changed commerce around the world and leading to the development and widespread use of the Internet. This proliferation of information over the Internet has led to an urgent and growing demand for information security professionals in Pakistan and all over the world. The growing use of Information Technology in Pakistan and all over the world offers numerous opportunities in high paying positions for the Information Security professionals.

Learning Outcomes

  •  The candidate possesses advanced knowledge in the field of information security in general and the following particular topics: computer and network security, security management, incident response, security of critical information infrastructure and legal aspects of information security. The candidate possesses special insight and expertise in information security technology, digital forensics or security management, depending on the chosen program track.
  • The candidate possesses thorough knowledge of academic theory and methods in the field of information security.
  • The candidate is capable of applying knowledge in new areas within the field of information security.
  •  The candidate is familiar with current state-of-the-art in the field of information security.
  • The candidate possesses thorough knowledge of scientific methodology, needed to plan and carry out research and development projects in the field of information security.
  •  The candidate is capable of analysing existing theories, methods and interpretations of theories within the field of information security as well as solving theoretical and practical problems independently.
  •  The candidate is capable of completing an independent research and development project of moderate size under supervision (example: the master thesis), adhering to the current code of ethics in scientific research.
  • The candidate is capable of contributing to innovation and innovation processes.

Admission criteria for MS IS

BS (SE/CS/IT/EE/CE) 4 years degree program or equivalent from HEC recognized university or degree awarding institute, or Computer Science conversion course two years degree program referred to as MCS or M.Sc. (Computer Science)

  1. Candidates possessing four-year degrees in Science & Engineering, are also eligible for entrance to this program, but may be required to take additional undergraduate courses.
  2. Minimum 60% marks in previous degree in case of annual system or 2.50/4.0 CGPA in case of semester system with no more than one second division throughout the academic career.
  3. No third division in entire academic caree
  4. Pass the following:
  1. HEC (HAT) / GAT NTS (General) / UMT Graduate Admission Test; (at least 50%)Admission
  2. Interview by UMT Graduate Admission Committee.
