Syed Haziq Abbas Jaffri, a Bachelor of Data Science student at the School of Science and Technology (SST), University of Management and Technology (UMT), has been selected for the prestigious Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) 2026, marking a significant international academic achievement.
This remarkable accomplishment marks a huge milestone for UMT, as Haziq becomes the first student in the university's history to secure a place in the highly competitive, fully funded Mitacs Globalink Research Internship program. The program attracts thousands of applications from across more than 15 partner countries worldwide and provides exceptional research opportunities at leading Canadian universities.
For years, Pakistan's representation in the program has predominantly come from a handful of highly recognized institutions. Haziq's selection not only highlights his individual excellence but also demonstrates the growing strength and global competitiveness of UMT's academic and research environment.
As part of the 2026 cohort, Haziq will spend 12 weeks at the University of Manitoba, Canada, conducting research under the supervision of Professor Yang Zhang. His project, titled "Computer Algebra and its Applications," focuses on developing advanced computational algorithms for matrices, tensors, and generalized quaternion systems, with applications in fields such as data science, signal processing, and control theory.
This achievement serves as an inspiration for aspiring students across UMT, particularly within the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence disciplines, proving that dedication, perseverance, and academic excellence can open doors to world-class opportunities.
